Every server or NAS quote your business receives mentions RAID, usually followed by a number, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 10, with no explanation of what the number means or why it changes the price. Here is what RAID actually does, in the terms that matter for a buying decision, not a technical one.
RAID protects against a hard drive dying, nothing more
RAID, Redundant Array of Independent Disks, is a way of combining multiple physical hard drives into a single storage system designed so that if one drive fails, physically breaks, which every hard drive eventually does, your data survives and your business keeps running while the failed drive is replaced. Without RAID, a server or NAS relying on a single hard drive means that drive's failure is a complete data loss event, not an inconvenience.
This is the single most important thing to understand about RAID: it protects against hardware failure specifically. It does nothing to protect against ransomware encrypting your files, an employee accidentally deleting an important folder, or the entire server being stolen, damaged, or destroyed in a fire or flood. RAID is a resilience feature, not a backup, and treating it as one is the most common and costly misunderstanding businesses have about their own storage setup.
The RAID levels business hardware actually uses
Most Singapore SME hardware quotes will reference one of three practical configurations.
RAID 1 mirrors data, writing an identical copy to two drives simultaneously. If one fails, the other keeps running without interruption. This is simple and reliable, but you only get the usable capacity of one drive despite buying two, since the second is entirely a copy of the first.
RAID 5 spreads both data and a calculated recovery value, parity, across three or more drives, so that any single drive can fail and the system can reconstruct what was on it from the others. This gives more usable storage capacity than RAID 1 for the same number of drives, at the cost of somewhat slower write performance and, in older or larger configurations, longer rebuild times after a drive is replaced.
RAID 10 combines mirroring and striping (splitting data across drives to improve speed), requiring at least four drives, and offers both strong performance and strong protection, at a higher hardware cost since roughly half the total capacity is used for redundancy rather than usable storage. This is typically reserved for business-critical systems where both speed and resilience genuinely matter, rather than a default choice for a small file server.
For most small Singapore business file servers or NAS units, RAID 1 or RAID 5 covers the practical need. RAID 10 is worth the added cost specifically when the system in question is running something performance-sensitive and business-critical, a database or an application server under real load, not simply shared file storage.
Why RAID is not a backup, and what actually is
This point is worth restating because it changes what a business needs to budget for. RAID protects the data currently on the array from a drive failure. It does not create a separate copy stored somewhere else, does not protect against data corruption or malicious encryption spreading across the array, and does not help at all if the entire server or NAS unit is lost. A genuine backup means a separate copy of your data, ideally stored somewhere physically or logically distinct from the original system, following the widely used rule of three total copies of your data, on two different types of storage, with one copy kept offsite. What We Typically See in Practice
In our experience working with Singapore businesses across education, aviation, and maritime, the most common pattern we see is a business that correctly invested in a RAID-protected server or NAS and then assumed that investment meant their data was fully protected, without a genuine separate backup in place.
What clients typically ask us when comparing hardware quotes is which RAID level they "need." The honest answer is that this depends far more on how business-critical the system is and what performance it needs than on any general rule, and it is a reasonable question to ask a vendor to justify specifically for your workload rather than accept as a default line item.
We also see businesses focus heavily on RAID configuration while treating backup as an afterthought, when in practice the backup strategy protects against far more scenarios, and matters at least as much for business continuity as the RAID level chosen.
